I was watching TV one sleepless night and stumbled upon an infomercial for some beauty product. The commercial showed before and after portraits, that to my eye, looked like the same photo just photoshopped. I laughed to myself. Then I made this video.

This commercial isn’t real, and neither are society’s standards of beauty.

  1. Brilliant. Needs to be seen by everyone not just young women

  2. This is the most hilarious thing I have ever seen! As a retoucher, this is brilliant. Thank you for making it.

  3. [...] in Infomercial Tricks Rate This Product:One of the common tricks infomercials sometimes use is Photoshop. If you look closely at some infomercials, you’ll see the same photo — just highly photo edited. This is how the parody ‘Fotoshop by Adobé” was concocted. “I was watching TV one sleepless night and stumbled upon an infomercial for some beauty product. 5. Just saw this on Vimeo. Wonderful! Brilliant, great work. I’m in the industry and this is 100% true and yet we continue down this path because it’s “expected”.

  6. Amazing poke at the industry! Funny but pointed! Love it! I am a photographer and it is crazy what we can do with an electronic image. Love that you point that out. People – especially teens need to see that what they see in the media is all an illusion! Thank you! This is amazing!

  7. Brilliant. We’ll pass it on!

  8. Brilliant video. I’m so impressed that you used professional quality production to stick it to the beauty industry. Thank you, and thanks to your models and crew.

  9. Excellent point made! This should be shared with every woman who have ever felt tempted to believe these infomercials… staying up late catching one of those shows that preys on gulibility (& despiration, lol). Bravo!

  10. Society’s standard of beauty has been unreal since the ancient Greeks started carving marble, at the latest. Long before digital photography and computer editing, humans have been striving toward an ideal image of ourselves.

  102. This brilliant, love it!! :) I always thought the same thing when I saw those TV commercials, that they’re just Photoshopped. For myself as a photographer, I always aim for what I label “ethical retouching” for portraits—flattery without physical alteration. If something is temporary, like a blemish, it’s fair game for removal since it’s not part of the person’s character/appearance. However if it’s permanent (scar, birthmark, wrinkles, etc.), they stay, but may be “softened” by smart use of lighting so that they draw less attention. Dark-room photographers and even painters have done it for ages. Perhaps it sounds like semantics, but I sleep better at night :)

  209. Hi Jesse,
I just posted this video to our FB and Twitter fans at goodforyougirls.com. We are constantly trying to bring to light the false beauty images our customers see. It’s bad enough that grown women still believe this hype but it’s unfortunate that companies don’t understand the psychological damage they are sending to girls between the critical ages of 9 and 12. A job well done!

  210. This is one of the best video i’ve seen recentely they should diffuse this video in highschools…maybe life there will be lil less superficial and that the great values of life will be back. Really good job !!!! Sry for poor english, i’m french

  212. THANK YOU! I’d assume everyone in the world realized how much retouching was done to models in commercials and print advertising…male and female alike, but obviously, many people don’t and they run out to buy whatever product will bring them “happiness” through long lashes or full lips.
