I was watching TV one sleepless night and stumbled upon an infomercial for some beauty product. The commercial showed before and after portraits, that to my eye, looked like the same photo just photoshopped. I laughed to myself. Then I made this video.
This commercial isn’t real, and neither are society’s standards of beauty.

[...] in Infomercial Tricks Rate This Product:One of the common tricks infomercials sometimes use is Photoshop. If you look closely at some infomercials, you’ll see the same photo — just highly photo edited. This is how the parody ‘Fotoshop by Adobé” was concocted. “I was watching TV one sleepless night and stumbled upon an infomercial for some beauty product. Amazing poke at the industry! Funny but pointed! Love it! I am a photographer and it is crazy what we can do with an electronic image. Love that you point that out. People – especially teens need to see that what they see in the media is all an illusion! Thank you! This is amazing!

Society’s standard of beauty has been unreal since the ancient Greeks started carving marble, at the latest. Long before digital photography and computer editing, humans have been striving toward an ideal image of ourselves.

I always thought the same thing when I saw those TV commercials, that they’re just Photoshopped. For myself as a photographer, I always aim for what I label “ethical retouching” for portraits—flattery without physical alteration. If something is temporary, like a blemish, it’s fair game for removal since it’s not part of the person’s character/appearance. However if it’s permanent (scar, birthmark, wrinkles, etc.), they stay, but may be “softened” by smart use of lighting so that they draw less attention. Dark-room photographers and even painters have done it for ages. Perhaps it sounds like semantics, but I sleep better at night

Hey Jesse
Thank you! I have two daughters .. 18 & 19. The 18 year old is a model (omg) so we know about this anyway but so many young women believe the ridiculous images shown in movies and on tv
Kudos! Great! Thanks!

Brilliant….thank you, thank you, thank you Jesse. Shared on our Facebook page. We are about providing people with info and products to help them live a more natural, non-toxic, eco-friendly lifestyle. You are helping with the natural bit…..we’ve got to help our young people realise they are being duped and manipulated – and how to resist it. So important and you’ve provided a major tool.

Facial shots are even easier – rather than polish up eye shape, skin tone, hair (etc etc) with Photoshop, one processing with Portrait Professional will do as well. It does, however, have one advantage: the kind of changes it makes make a mess of the Facebook and Google facial recognition software..

Two great (and different) viral videos this past week :: Media Lightbox Blog
Hi Jesse,
I just posted this video to our FB and Twitter fans at goodforyougirls.com. We are constantly trying to bring to light the false beauty images our customers see. It’s bad enough that grown women still believe this hype but it’s unfortunate that companies don’t understand the psychological damage they are sending to girls between the critical ages of 9 and 12. A job well done!

[...] When it comes to my own photography, my photoshop philosophy is “just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Or event want to.” That’s why I only use photoshop in moderation. I want my photographs to radiate your personal beauty. I want to show off the beautiful person that you are. The real you. Not an idealized version yourself that’s so digitally perfected that it’s actually a lie. Just remember, even the supermodels don’t look like supermodels. [...] I have been working on health and beauty topics recently that have had me fretting about what we, as a society, are endorsing as beauty. Self-image problems are rampant and seem to cut across race, class, ethnicity and country. However, I believe I am not wrong when I say that I believe more women than men are caught in this trap. So when I saw this funny video, I felt it is well worth sharing to get the message out there. The video is sourced from http://www.jesserosten.com. [...]

Awesome! We desperately need messages like these in the media! When my daughter was born, 18 years ago, I was hoping that commercials like these would be a thing of the past. Needless to say, the media remains in the Stone Ages when portraying women. I now have hopes for a better future for my daughter. Please keep up the great work!

AND, btw, didja notice, the professional ones that were photoshopped ALREADY were slim and beautiful? They are not only shoving UNREALISTIC down our throats, but also the belief that what is a healthy beautiful weight is now considered not good enough.

It took me a minute to catch on, but once I did, oh boy! Very cool. I’ve shared with my friends n fam. I do hope this new perspective about “beauty” filters to the top of pop culture even though we know it will kill advertisers and the media. I have shared this on FB- well done folks. I do want to paste my comment from my share though, especially as it relates to some of the comments above from those that work with or in the industry itself: “This is brilliant- the link to the ‘behind the scenes’ is a wee giggle too. So many comment that people-especially teens- need to see this to understand what an illusion media images are. I think instead of accepting that this is how things work, that we need to change things from inside the industry itself to destroy the use of illusion full stop. The unconscious translates that illusionary image as the expected norm- because it is bombarded with thousands of them every day. And I admit I am uncomfortable with Jesse’s use of models (as valid as they are of course,) over women who fit outside of that body type. Regardless the message is very clear. We have our work cut out for us.”

I just have to say that this is the most brilliant thing I’ve ever seen in my life. In October of 2011 I was at SEMA in Vegas and was laughing with some friends about how many of them Photoshop their cars and other things and try to pass it off as the real deal. We were thinking how funny it would be if this very commercial existed. Imagine how happy I was when I found this a year ago!! I just passed it along to a friend who is learning Photoshop and figured I’d finally comment on how genius this whole commercial is. The whole internet is worth whatever problems it causes me because of this one video. You are a genius person and thank you so much for making something in my imagination a reality.
