When using the transmitter with a d7000, can you use one card to record images while using the second to transmit a sample image to the ipad?

Firstly I would like to thank Jesse for sharing his thoughts with us.

I beleive ,although I am no IT expert, that there is no need to jail break anything. simply turn on your Iphone personal hotspot and connect both devices (eye fi and IPad) on the network created

I have been using the eye fi pro x2 to connect to a standard Ipad for about a year. You do not need to jailbreak the ipad.

I have used both a canon 550D and an 5D2, in fact I use the 550D just about everyday like this, no sweat.

Think twice if you have an iPad 2... the current version of the iPad 2 OS (4.3.5) can't be jail broken, so you won't be able to do this without having a computer/network to transfer the files between your camera and iPad.

Should be even easier with Nikon since it uses SD cards. No CF adapter or older model Eye-fi needed.

Pretty clever and creative solution!

I love showing off my pics on a nice big screen. and as you say, that ability is a real must on remote shoots these days.

I will be using this trick for sure!

Does the shuttersnitch app allow you to wirelessly control the camera. Including shutter speeds, aperture and ISO? If so, I am going for it.

will, and for those that would like to use the new X2 Eye-Fi cards, after scouring the Eye-forums it is apparently possible with specific CF/SD adapters, I recently wrote a sum up of the option in a obsession to find a solution:
http://danylophotography.com/blog/?p=439

It worked for several people and I am waiting for my adapter + ipad to pop in the mail any day now ; ) i'll give an update on the results!

hi jesse,

as robby already asked - I also can't figure out how to force the 5DMKII to only send the jpegs and keep the RAWs on the card????

has this something to do with eye-fi card?
Or the software?? (shuttersnitch?)

On the camera itself I can't find any setting for sepaeate file handling??

I'm really desparate to find a solution because the tethering possibility is really taunting... :-)

Well I tried it with the "connect" version. It didn't want to recognize the ipads signal. Oh well... I don't see myself spending $150 on the pro card (rather have an octobox).

James, my (limited) understanding is that to connect the card directly to the iPad, using the iPad generated wifi network, you'll need the card to support Ad Hoc connections. So yes, this translates to the Pro version. But I'm not an expert and haven't tested with the cheaper models. If I were you, I'd get both the high and low end, test 'em, and return the one you don't need.

James, my (limited) understanding is that to connect the card directly to the iPad, using the iPad generated wifi network, you’ll need the card to support Ad Hoc connections. So yes, this translates to the Pro version. But I’m not an expert and haven’t tested with the cheaper models. If I were you, I’d get both the high and low end, test ‘em, and return the one you don’t need.

So would I need the pro version for this to work? I was hoping to get the cheapest eye-fi SD to put in my D7000 (it uses SD and NOT CF) so would that work? Also, would the jail broken app send a signal that any eye-fi card can pick up?

Will, at this point, I'm thinking they're probably out of stock everywhere. Best bet is to petition EyeFi to make a CF version of their cards.

Hi this seems an excellent way to cut prices on the canon wifi grip. I did a fast check online of where i could find eye fi cards but it seems hard to find the old pro generation.
Is it certain that this setup wont work with the X2 generation of eye fi ?

thanks. r.

The Eye-Fi card only works with a wireless network. So if there's no wireless network available, you'll have to create one using the MyWi app.

its great but, its still a bit overcomplicated, am i the only person who is not totaly in love with wifi! whatever speeds they claim teatherd by usb cable also seems faster and more reliable

im fed up looking a right joker in front of the client when u lose connection !!!!!!!!!

the ipad / android tabs are just what you need for location but we need a app somthing like on1 but will work via cable live, and ideally operate the camera, it seems obvious to me and im sure it on its way but when!! its been nearly 6 mts now

Jesse,

Re CF card adapters. You are correct, the X2 Pro will not work with CF adapters, but older versions of the Eye-Fi cards may work.

Hello Irene,

The purpose for jailbreaking the iPad is to create a wireless network (using the MyWi app). If you are shooting where a wireless network already exists, there is no need to jailbreak.

I've tested the new EyeFi X2 Pro with a Canon 5dMKII and Syncrotech CF adapter and it does NOT work. It may work with other camera bodies though.

hi jesse,

supposed that eye-fi pro already have the ad hoc feature (http://www.eye.fi/how-it-works/features/advanced ), doesn't it mean that i don't have to jail break the ipad? have you ever tried with the non-pro eye-fi? because i can't find eye-fi pro anywhere in the market. seems like it's discontinued.

thanks,
irene

thanks for the article. I have a 40D. Do you know if that will recognise the X2 or will I need the classic pro card?
Thanks

Daniel,

If you have wireless available where you're shooting, then you don't need to run the MyWi app. If no wireless is available, you can try to find a portable device that'll create a WiFi hotspot.

Hi, Jesse!
Thank you for this great tutorial!
I was looking for a solution like this one to use between my 40D and my brand new iPad. However... I don't want to jailbreak it. Do you know any other solution to myWi? Or just the other 3 will do the trick?

Cheers,
Daniel

To do this with video you need some heftier hardware. Check out the Cube by Teradek. It's spendy, but hey, no wires!
